After starting karate in 1958, Ralph received his Black Belt in 1965. Being the oldest Black Belt to win the California Sate Karate Championships in 1967 & 1969, Ralph was considered the "Elder Statesman" of karate. Castellanos went on to win the 1969 U.S. Open in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1970 he won the All American Championships and was a member of the West Coast All Stars in a Madison Square Garden event. In 1971 Ralph won the National Black Belt Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Castellanos is still teaching karate today in South Lake Tahoe, California.
