Pat Burleson is acknowledged as the "grandfather" of light contact karate in America, having won numerous national titles before retiring from competition in 1966. He was the 1962 East Coast Championship runner-up, and the runner up in the 1st World Karate Championship held in Chicago in 1963. Burleson was the first champion of the National Karate Championships in Washington, D.C.
